Beyond Speech Initiative, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (T.I.N. 99-1280472) dedicated to empowering Nonspeaking individuals through access to alternative communication, public education, and building supportive communities for Nonspeaking, Minimally Speaking, and Unreliably Speaking individuals and their families.

Our mission is to empower Nonspeaking, Minimally Speaking, and Unreliably Speaking individuals with tools and support for effective communication and growth. We foster community connections through events and partnerships, providing spaces for shared experiences and resources.
We believe that communication is so much more than spoken words. It can take many forms - and every individual deserves the chance to be heard in the way that works best for them.
We honor the strengths and abilities of each person we serve and hold firmly to the belief in their competence, potential, and value.
By providing access to tools like letterboards and using teaching methods that go beyond traditional therapy, we help nonspeakers find their voices and share their talents.
Our goal is simple: to create a community where every form of communication is recognized, respected, and celebrated. Together, we can build a world that is more inclusive, equitable, and compassionate for all.

75%+ of funds directly support scholarships for Nonspeaking Individuals to work with certified practitioners and build their spelled communication skills.
Up to 15% of funds go toward community events that bring together local Nonspeaking individuals and their families.
Up to 10% of funds are reserved for future growth—helping us expand events, education, and fundraising opportunities.
Our Board is made up of 100% volunteers, ensuring that donations go where they matter most.

Beyond Speech Initiative S2C Scholarship Program
We’re excited to introduce the Beyond Speech Initiative S2C Scholarship Program, designed to make Spelling to Communicate (S2C) more accessible to those who need it most.

About the Scholarship
Our scholarship program is available for individuals and families who require financial assistance to participate in S2C services. Funds are awarded bi-annually. The next application deadline is September 22nd for coverage October-March 2026. No late submissions will be accepted.
Eligibility Requirements
- The individual you are applying for must be 4 years of age or older.
- Only parents or legal guardians may apply on behalf of their child/adult.
- You and your S2C Practitioner must reside in Ohio.
- Your S2C Practitioner must either be a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), an Occupational Therapist (OT), or be supervised by an SLP or OT.
- A communication partner must be available several days per week and committed to helping the individual learn to effectively use spelling as their primary form of communication.
